Travel Writing, Good For The Soul, Good For The World

December 8, 2009 by Damian Papworth · Leave a Comment

I love to travel. It started for me early in my career when I had to spend a week in Thailand to help a client upgrade their IT systems. The week was very hectic, 13 hour days at work, social business invitations after, I didn’t have a lot of time to myself at all. I ended up taking a day of annual leave though and staying in Bangkok for the weekend and the following Monday. Those three days opened my eyes. Thailand was such a different world to what I had in Melbourne, Australia. I was hooked, I needed to see what else the world had to offer. I’d officially caught the travel bug.

Since the Thailand introduction to the world, I’ve been sent to Africa, Europe and throughout Asia. My business trips were not where is ended though, with all the mileage points I accrued, I continued to travel in my spare time. I simply love seeing new places and meeting new people.

One thing I always ensured when I traveled, was to pack my cameras, a diary and a pen. Looking back, I see the discipline I exercised here as moments of brilliance. Travel truly became the inspiration for what I see as my art. My pen and lenses became the mediums through which I expressed this art. Now I have a wonderful array of photos adorning my walls and diaries full of action packed adventures which my family can enjoy, whenever we reminisce of happy days past.

When reflecting on these journeys, I can see how much my mind has been opened by the experiences I have had. In witnessing the diversity the world has to offer, I have become a wiser person, a better person.

Then there are the people I’ve met on the way. In accepting their hospitality, their customs and generosity, my heart has been opened. Sure, they may have a different way of doing things, a different way of interpreting events, they are just people though, people like you and I. In learning to accept them without prejudice, my capacity for love and tolerance increased immensely.

Travel has been really good to me. I am a much better person for my experiences and so I write about them. Writing about these experiences means I can share the insights I have developed with people who have not been as fortunate as I, people who are not blessed with the opportunity to travel. In sharing such insights, the experiences which have helped me become a more tolerant, accepting person may help someone else do the same.

It is in this way that the travels which have been so good for my soul, may also be good for the world.

Travel is one of my true loves. I caught the travel bug when travel became a part of my career. My first overseas assignment was a week in Thailand. This trip can only be described by the word “whirlwind”. 13 hour days at the office, followed up by dinner engagements every night. I didn’t get to see Bangkok at all so I decided to take the following Monday off work and stay for the long weekend. Those three days changed my life. Suddenly I was hooked on seeing new places.

When reminiscing, I realise that it was in seeing the diversity the world has to offer, that my mind has been opened. I understand now that there is often no right or wrong, there is just different. And different isn’t bad, it is there to be respected, it is there to create thought, it is there to be enjoyed.

I know I have grown as a person as I traveled. I know I will keep doing so, so long as I continue to travel. However I also know that there are many, many people who do not have the opportunity or luxury to see the world as I have. That is why I publish the things I have written, my insights, my lessons and experiences. Hopefully others, not as fortunate as I, can at least share some of the joys of travel through reading.

If you are traveler too, why don’t you share your experiences. We can all learn from each other. I am sure the world will be a better place if you share the things you have picked up along the way.

Cast includes Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse, Frances Sternhagen, Andreas Katsulas, Terri Hanauer, Joel Carlson, and Basil Hoffman. (107 minutes, 1977)

Prom Night: Three years after a homicidally compulsive professor Schaech killed her clan, a pleasant high-school kid, Sleet is stalked by an unwanted admirer on the day of her senior pro minutes. Brittany Sleet. Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis, Collins Pennie, Kelly Blatz, James Ransone, Brianne Davis, ldris Elba, Mary Mara, Ming Ming-Na Wen, Jessalyn Gilsig, Linden Ashby, and Jonathon Schaech. Controller Simpson co-scripted with Nelson; Weaver is his spouse. Cast includes Sigourney Weaver, and Anthony LaPaglia. (88 minutes, 2003)

The Thief of Bagdad: Fairbanks is unusually ballistic and ingratiating as ever in this dull Arabian Days pantomime, laid out to inject a real sense of marvel. Hoot: Well meaning although stringently formulaic family comedy in which Lerman, the new kid in junior high school, deals with everything from a local bully to the vandalizing of a construction site that is home to jeopardized owls.
